چکیده

Tomographic images of the distribution of shear wave speed beneath the northwestern Pacific delineate the configuration of the subducted oceanic lithosphere beneath the western Aleutian Arc. At ~100 km depth, a fast shear wave speed anomaly lies beneath the Aleutian Arc everywhere east of 173E. Between 164E and 173E, however, seismic velocities at this depth are slow relative to the surrounding mantle. The lateral termination of the fast shear wave speed anomaly at depth coincides with a gap in deep seismicity beneath the Aleutians. The absence of these two distinctive traits of subducting slabs leads us to conclude that this segment of the Aleutian Arc overlies a portal in the otherwise continuous lithospheric slab. The portal is likely to facilitate the production of distinctive volcanic rocks (adakites or high Mg # andesites) by partially melting the adjacent edges of the slab. The Miocene age of adakites above the westernmost Aleutians may indicate that the portal was formed relatively recently.

Sub-slab anisotropy beneath the Sumatra and circum-Pacific subduction zones from source-side shear wave splitting observations

Understanding the dynamics of subduction is critical to our overall understanding of plate tectonics and the solid Earth system. Observations of seismic anisotropy can yield constraints on deformation patterns in the mantle surrounding subducting slabs, providing a tool for studying subduction dynamics. While many observations of seismic anisotropy have been made in subduction systems, our unde...

Behaviour of high field strength elements in subduction zones: constraints from Kamchatka–Aleutian arc lavas

Models explaining the characteristic depletion of High Field Strength Elements (HFSE) relative to elements of similar compatibility in subduction zone magmas invoke either (1) the presence of HFSE-rich minerals in the subduction regime or (2) a selectively lower mobility of HFSE during subduction metasomatism of the mantle. In order to investigate the properties of HFSE in subduction regimes cl...

Magnesian andesite in the western Aleutian Komandorsky region: Implications for slab melting and processes in the mantle wedge

The role of the subducting lithospheric slab in the genesis of mantle-derived (primitive) magmas is investigated through a study of volcanic rocks formed in the tectonically strike-slip–dominated western Aleutian arc. Two types of chemically and petrologically distinctive primitive andesites have been found among the Miocene– late Pleistocene–age volcanic rocks in the western Aleutians. These a...

Mantle structure beneath the western United States and its implications for convection processes

[1] We present tomographic images of the mantle structure beneath the western United States. Our Dynamic North America Models of P and S velocity structure (DNA07‐P and DNA07‐S) use teleseismic body waves recorded at ∼600 seismic stations provided by the Earthscope Transportable Array and regional networks. DNA07‐P and ‐S benefit from the unprecedented aperture of the network while maintaining ...

Crustal thickness beneath the Andes and Sierras Pampeanas at 30 S inferred from Pn apparent phase velocities

[1] We obtained a 2D crustal model beneath central Chile and western Argentina using apparent Pn phase velocities recorded along an EW trending transect at 30 S. This model is characterized by a thick (65 km) crustal root beneath the High Cordillera, a 60 km thick crust beneath the Precordillera, and a gradual shallowing of Moho depths beneath the Sierras Pampeanas from 55 km in the west to 40 ...
